The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards seek to capture the imaginations of school students across Australia, inspiring them to express their thoughts and feelings through the medium of poetry in their pursuit of literary excellence. The standard of entries year after year is consistently high, yet the winning poems never cease to impress the judges. From reading the entries of both the primary and secondary students, one can get an idea of the current events and issues that have had a great impact on young Australians over the decades.
Opening on the 1st of March and ending on the 30th of June each year, the competition requires the Project Officer to oversee entries, answer inquiries, assist the parents, teachers and students and promote the competition as well as a myriad of other tasks. Behind the scenes the committee initiates, manages and completes other projects, the focus of which is always new ways to expand, promote and highlight the poetry contest. Our goal remains the same – to increase the number of schools entering each year and find schools in more and more remote localities.
